The Pink Beach

On Budelli Island we can see the legendary Pink Beach, one of the most beautiful in the world! It owes its name to the colour of the sand, rich in tiny fragments of bryozoan skeletons, coral, granite, shells and mollusc shells. The spectacular colouring is due to a pink micro-organism that 'inhabits' the Posidonia oceanica meadows. When it dies, the shells are washed ashore, shredded by the action of water and wind. To protect this very fragile ecosystem, no boats have been allowed to anchor or swim here since 1998.

The famous Rosa beach is a true natural monument. The colour of the sand is mainly given by skeletons of bryozoans (predominantly Miriapora truncata) and foraminifera (predominantly Miniacina miniacea) that give the sand an intense texture.

Where is the pink beach and how to get there?

The Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach) is located on the south-east coast of Budelli Island, in the heart of the La Maddalena Archipelago in Sardinia. It is undoubtedly one of the best known beaches in the archipelago. Its real name is Cala Roto, later renamed Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach) for the particular colour of the sandy shore. It enjoys the full protection of the Park, so it is not allowed to reach the Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach), however, it is possible to admire it from the nearby Spiaggia del Cavaliere (Cavaliere Beach).
